Why Avalanches are Important

Welcome

Welcome to the Basic Course Study Guides

Congratulations!
The fact that you’ve made it to this page means that you have some interest in keeping yourself safe in the backcountry, and that is half the battle. This course is broken up into 7 units. Unit 1 will introduce you to why avalanches education is important. Unit 2 will focus on the basic mechanics of avalanches. Unit 3, 4, and 5 will help you understand and recognize the three factors that lead to dangerous avalanche conditions. Unit 6 will cover decision making. Finally, unit 7 will address what to do if you or a friend is caught. This course is loaded with figures, video, and links to help you learn. Don’t be afraid to explore! However, try to go through the units in order, as each builds on concepts learned in previous units. And remember, sitting at a computer is no substitute for real, on-snow learning. Sign up to take an avalanche course in your area.
