The ten contributory factors to direct action avalanches This unit covers the second factor involved in avalanche formation, weather. Specifically, we will discuss the 10 contributory factors to direct action (naturally triggered) avalanches. These factors include: Old Snow Surface New Snow Depth New Snow Type Old Snow Depth Density (Total Water Content) Snowfall Intensity Precipitation Intensity Wind Direction and Speed Temperature Settlement of New Snow By the end of this unit, you should be able to explain how each of these factors contributes to avalanche hazard. f
