Rescue Plan

The Rescue Plan

Your organization should have a rescue plan already developed. Know it! The success of any rescue effort depends on developing and practicing these standing procedures.  The plan should outline the chain of command, man power responsibilities, where additional resources are located, and how the accident alarm is transmitted.  These plans should be updated and reviewed every season. Ask where a paper the copy of the plan is in your organization and be familiar with it.  Remember, a successful rescue attempt must be executed extremely efficiently.  An effective rescue must be immediately activated and find the victim quickly(stage I) then resuscitate and evacuate the patient (stage II).  If the accident is very large or immediate rescue fails, additional resources may needed (stage III).

This unit on organized rescue is adapted from Avalanche Rescue Fundamentals by William Hotchkiss, Dale Atkins, and Lin Ballard, published the National Ski Patrol.

Gear
All patrollers/rescuers should carry a personal transceiver, shovel, and probe.  However, there also should be a gear cache with extra gear at several areas at a resort.  Know where each of these caches are and what gear is stored there.  Stage I Caches (at the top of lifts) should contain: ten probes, resuscitation equipment, probe line cord, and tape or wands to mark the path, clues, and point last scene.
In addition to the gear listed above, the main cache (positioned at summit station) should include: bundles of one piece probes, revival and evacuation equipment, sleeping bags, stove, tent, headlamps, floodlights, additional probe cord, flagging and wands, and advanced medical equipment.
